What is chafing?

A lot of times because of friction the skin becomes sore.  Friction is often caused because of clothing or when body parts rub against each other. Some of the areas that get affected by chafing are the nipples, armpits, inner thighs and the groin area. While skin chafing can happen to anyone, athletes and obese people are more prone to getting chafed skin. But the good news is that you can prevent chafing by taking a little care.

Symptoms of skin chafing:

You know that your skin is chafed when you experience a burning and stinging sensation. The patch of skin that is chafed will become red too.

Causes of skin chafing:

Friction is the main cause of chafing. If your clothes or another body part keeps rubbing against the skin, then it could lead to chafed skin. Sweat and moisture can aggravate chafing.

Skin Chafing treatment:

There are several steps that you can take to cure and prevent chafing.

  • You need to stay dry to prevent friction between parts of the body. For example, in summer, while exercising in the gym or playing a sport, you might have noticed that your thighs rub more often and due to the sweat, the skin becomes chafed easily. Thus, keeping the body dry is one way to prevent and cure chafing. During summer, keep your body clean and sweat free by bathing often and using talcum powder. Wear loose, cotton clothes as this will allow the sweat on the surface of your skin to evaporate.
  • You can wear clothes made of soft fabric and clothes that have been tailored to your body shape to prevent them from rubbing against a particular area of the body.
  • A diet rich in vitamin C and A as well as zinc can cure chafing.
  • You can treat the chafed area by washing it with warm water and gently patting it dry with a soft cloth. You can apply a medicated cream on the area or cover the skin with sterile gauze.
  • Sometimes chafing happens when a person has too much of weight on the thighs or around the groin. This causes the body parts to rub against each other most of the time, causing chafing. To prevent this from happening, you will need to loose weight.
  • It is also believed that boxers in men and pantyhose in women may be the cause of this problem. Well-fitting, soft underclothes can also prevent chafed nipples as well as chafing in the groin area.
  • Calendula oil is another chafing remedy that you can try.
