Skin Infections

Skin infections have plagued man from time immemorial. No one is spared from skin infections. These are caused by either bacteria or fungus. Skin infections caused by fungus are highly contagious. These are easily caught by contact with infected persons.

The common skin infections are athlete’s foot, ringworm, shingles, and jock itch. Boils and carbuncles are another kind of skin infection that makes the cause eruptions of sores filled with pus. Skin infections are painful and can be debilitating. Unknown to many, symptoms of skin infections are not always manifested. A person with the athlete’s foot fungus may not even know he has the skin disease.

How can skin infections be avoided? People can be sure of protections against skin infections if they are aware of the causes of the diseases. Since several types of fungus flourish in damp and moist areas, people should be careful of contamination in public places. The health gym, locker room, and common showers are the breeding places of bacteria and fungus that cause skin infections. Proper hygiene must be observed at all times if skin diseases are to be avoided.

Modern medicine has come up with various treatments for skin disorders. Treatments may vary according to type and degree of skin infections. Mild skin infections can be treated with salves and ointments. These can be bought over-the-counter in most drugstores. For severe cases, oral treatment is administered. The better known topical agents are Lamisil AT, Lotrimin AF, and Micatin. Oral treatments are Sporanox, Diflucan, and Lamisil. The use of herbal treatments is another alternative. It is also safer.

Herbal treatments for fungal skin infections are black walnut tea or tincture, calendula cream, goldenseal poultice, extract from olive leaves, Pau d’ Arco herbal tea or tincture, tea tree oil, and thyme oil. Care should be exercised however in using the herbal treatments as allergies may occur.

People can prevent the onset of skin infections by wearing protective shoes in damp and moist places. Personal articles should not be shared. Wounds should be washed well with warm water and soap to prevent the occurrence of skin infections. For shingles, a vaccine shot is administered. Common areas should be regularly disinfected and kept clean. Infected people should get immediate medical treatment to avoid the spread of the disease.
