Medical treatments to take care of wrinkles -

  • Topical applications, namely retinoids. Retinoids are derived from vitamin A, and these retinoids when applied to the skin might be able to cut down fine wrinkles, pigmentations that are splotchy and rough skin. Dermatologists usually prescribe retinoids with a skin-care program that also include effective sunscreen and suggest that the individual wear protective clothing as the medication has the tendency to make the skin burn more easily. Retinoids may also cause skin redness, dryness of the skin, itching, and a sensation of burning or tingling. Two examples of topical retinoids include Tretinoin and tazarotene.
  • Surgical methods and other treatments - There are a number of skin resurfacing methods that are either injectables, derma fillers or surgical procedures that are available to smoothen wrinkles. Each procedure is different from each other and also has its own set of problems of advantages and side effects.
  • Dermabrasion is a popular procedure that consists of planing the skin which is at the top most layers with the help of a rapidly rotating brush or a circular instrument. The skin planing gets rid of the skin cells on the top most layers of the skin and helps to reveal a new layer of skin that is beneath and which comes to the surface. However with this procedure there is bound to be some redness, or swelling that generally lasts for a few weeks. The redness may also take several months to go away and observe the desired results.
  • Microdermabrasion is a similar technique to dermabrasion, but in this procedure there is less surface skin that is removed. This technique usually needs repeated number of treatments in order to preserve the subtle yet temporary results.
  • Laser, light or radio frequency treatments - These treatments which involve the use of laser lights, intense means of lights or radio waves help to heat the dermis and form the development of new collagen and elastin. However the skin begins to feel firm and refreshed only after several treatments.
  • Chemical peels - The dermatologist applies a medicated acid to the affected areas on the skin that causes the skin to burn only in the outer layers. With medium-depth chemical peels, the total epidermis and a small area of the dermis are eliminated. The new skin that forms is smoother and has fewer wrinkles than the old skin. The redness of the skin can last up to several months.
