Tinea Treatment

Treating tinea effectively requires a sound understanding of the infection and an approach that is not just remedial, but also preventive. Tinea is a fungal skin infection and includes a variety of conditions like tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea unguium (toenail fungus), tinea cruris (Jock itch), tinea corporis (Ringworm) and tinea capitis (Scalp ringworm).

Treating Tinea
 
Since tinea is a fungal infection it thrives in regions that are damp or moist and warm. Hygiene is therefore a primary concern in the treatment for tinea and it is important that you keep your armpits, feet and groins clean. Make it a point to always dry these regions well after washing. Wearing footwear like sandals and other open footwear can also help as it allows the feet to air out and stay dry. In addition avoid wearing synthetic socks, as cotton is a much better option. Avoid wearing thick clothing that restricts airflow and causes perspiration.

The most common causes of tinea infections are:
•    damp or moist conditions,
•    the use of communal baths,
•    atopy,
•    immunocompromised states,
•    genetic predisposition,
•    cushing syndrome, and
•    athletic activities that causes abrasions, skin tears or trauma.

How to treat tinea?
In addition to your basic hygiene practices there are also a number of effective treatments. Conventional treatment for tinea for the most part involves the application of topical ointments and in some circumstances oral medications may also be prescribed. Anti fungal powders are also quite effective in treating tinea and can help limit and prevent, as well as treat the infection. Tinea infections may at times require prolonged treatment and discontinuing treatment contrary to advice frequently results in relapses or secondary infections. For this reason it is important that you adhere to your doctor’s prescription advice and continue the use of medication for tinea as required. Topical agents are generally prescribed for one to six weeks.

If you prefer to treat the condition at home or are worried about the side effects from conventional medications there are some effective home remedies for tinea that you can try.

•    Ginger and garlic are known for their medicinal value among herbalists and they are quite effective against tinea infections. For tinea infections of the foot, soak the feet in a basin of warm water, with some crushed ginger or crushed garlic pods added to it. Do this at least twice a day.
•    Dusting the affected areas with garlic powder, or cleansing with garlic juice is also believed to be a useful home remedy.
•    Apple cider and vinegar can also be used as an effective tinea treatment, either by cleansing the affected areas with a cotton swab soaked in the solution or through a soak.
