Hives Symptoms

Hives is known by its appearance of upraised mark on the skin that is usually white or pink in color. These raised welt-like batches of skin are often itchy and come in different shapes and size. Hives are also known as urticaria. Most people develop hives as a result of an allergic reaction while some people suffer from chronic hives or urticaria. A case of temporary hives usually disappears within a few days of weeks while that of chronic urticaria can last more than six to seven weeks and may disappear. However people suffering from skin problems like chronic hives face the problem repeatedly as these hives appear time and again.

Chronic Hives Causes

In individuals who suffer from chronic hives, it is not easy to pinpoint the cause of it but many medical analysts believe that it happens due to an autoimmune disorder where the body starts to get allergic to itself. Recurrent and persistent hives may also have a connection in lupus or thyroid disease. Chronic hives is the response of body tissues to injury or irritation; characterized by pain and swelling and is activated when mast cells bring out histamine and isolated chemicals into the blood flowing through the circulatory system, causing tiny blood capillaries to ooze. In most cases hives occur in the case of insect bites, infections or parasite attack. During such attacks from foreign bodies, hives can be controlled with a blend of antihistamine medicines that offers the good relief.

Hives itching can bring about a good amount of irritation. In some cases when the hives go beyond control and get serious, it is possible that swelling may also happen in the mouth or throat. Further complexities would comprise shortness of breath or inability to breathe normally leading to unconsciousness. However, if the throat begins to well up, then it's time to call the doctor as soon as possible.

Hives Treatment

It is possible to prevent the attack of hives by avoiding and staying off known triggers and taking proper skin care. Any form of allergens such as typical foods or its additives, medications or atmospheric conditions such as extreme temperatures and emotional stress and strain must be reduced or eliminated to prevent hive attacks. For those who have a history of the disorder it would do well for them to maintain a record of sorts about the timing and location and cause of the previous hive attack. Certain types of medicines and also alcohol are known causes of hives in those who do not have the ability to tolerate those substances, and hence it must be kept away to prevent further recurrences.
