What is a vaginal yeast infection

A yeast infection is caused by the fungi Candida Albicans. It occurs when a disturbance in the body’s balance causes the small amounts of yeast present in the body to multiply unchecked. When this growth takes place in the vagina, it results in a vaginal yeast infection.

This imbalance could be due to high stress, a result of strong antibiotic medication, because of an underlying medical condition like diabetes or due to hormonal fluctuations caused during pregnancy, etc.

Vaginal yeast infection symptoms include severe itching, skin irritation, soreness, swelling, thick white vaginal discharge, burning sensation when urinating, and pain during sexual intercourse.   • Tea Tree Oil – This is a known natural antifungal agent. It fights off the yeast infection and soothes skin irritation. Apply a few drops of diluted tea tree oil to the vagina and surrounding skin twice a day till the infection heals.
  • Yogurt – Yogurt is one of the most popular home remedies for yeast infection. It can be included in your diet or applied directly on the irritating skin. Its soothing effect will make an immediate impact. In addition, the bacteria present in yogurt are very effective in yeast elimination.
  • Vinegar – Vinegar has strong antifungal properties. It is a common ingredient in the treatment of vaginal yeast infection. Mix a cup of vinegar to a warm bath and soak. Continue this routine daily till symptoms subside.
  • Regulated Diets – Your diet has a strong impact on how your body handles a yeast infection. Foods full of sugar, alcohol, dairy and yeast tend to increase rate of yeast multiplication. Cut down on such foods immediately in the face of a yeast infection. Women who have a history of diabetes or are pregnant should take extra precautions. Consult your physician and establish an appropriate diet plan. Include healthy greens in every meal and drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

How to prevent vaginal yeast infection –

Women can try to make some changes to avoid or ensure there is no recurrence in vaginal yeast infection. These changes include:

  • Wear comfortable, loose undergarments, preferably soft cottons
  • Don’t linger in damp, sweaty clothes for long. Change out of your gym clothes as soon as possible
  • Avoid scented and perfumed toiletries. This includes scented toilet paper, sanitary napkins and tampons, and bath products
  • Change tampons and pads frequently when menstruating
  • Follow a healthy diet and drink lots of water
