What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that is characterized by redness on the face. As long as it does not affect the eyes, it is harmless, but can be embarrassing. It generally affects people of northwestern European origin and women are affected more than men. It typically affects people between the ages of 30-60.

Rosacea causes and symptoms:

The causes for rosacea have been identified as higher levels of the peptide cathelicidin and certain tryptic enzymes, and also due to hyper-sensitization of sensory neurons. The symptoms include redness on the center of the face and across the cheeks, nose, or forehead; red domed pustules or bumps; red gritty eyes; and in some cases, a red nose. Many rosacea patients respond to specific triggers such as a change in temperature, humidity, exposure to the sun, wind or cold weather, spicy foods, certain skin products and foods like liver, yogurt, cheese, egg plant, and spinach. Rosacea has also been linked to alcohol consumption, anxiety, heavy exercise and stress.  It is important to identify what exactly triggers the incidence of rosacea.

Natural Rosacea Treatment:

  • There are medications available for rosacea to reduce inflammation, redness, and pustules, but they often cause side effects. An excellent natural treatment for rosacea involves the application of a cream made from chrysanthellum indicum extract. This will show excellent results in two month’s time. Green tea cream is helpful in clearing red bumps and pustules.
  • It works well in about four week’s time and needs to be applied twice a day. Green tea lessens reactivity to ultraviolet light and reduces the symptoms and signs of rosacea.
  • Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B, is another rosacea product and can be used topically to increase moisture content and reduce inflammation.  It can be taken orally too.
  • Natural remedies for rosacea include licorice, fever few, oatmeal, lavender, chamomile, camphor, and tea tree oil. Licorice is a strong anti-inflammatory product that reduces skin inflammation in rosacea. Fever few helps in inhibiting the release of serotonin from platelets and is good for treating rosacea. Oatmeal alleviates the itching of dry skin and promotes barrier protection function which is impaired in rosacea patients. Lavender reduces painful inflammatory conditions. Chamomile is an excellent rosacea skin care product. Tea tree oil and camphor have anti-inflammatory properties but need to be used with care as they are very potent and can harm the skin if they are not diluted before use.
  • Eat foods rich in vitamin B and avoid foods that trigger rosacea. The other natural cures for rosacea that you can try are apple cider vinegar, aloe, burdock, red clover, zinc, selenium or rose hips.
