Natural Sun Tan Products

Earlier a good tan was considered a sign of good health, but with warnings of skin cancer on the rise, people look to sunscreens to protect themselves from harmful UV radiation. There are plenty of products that offer protection from sun exposure, but they carry some physical and environmental risks with repeated use.

Are there any natural sunscreens? Many people avoid using store bought chemical sun sunscreens and use natural ingredients and wear protective clothing to prevent sun burns. The ideal protection would be to limit the time spent in the sun, especially during the peak hours between 11 am and 3 pm.

  • A simple sunscreen lotion can be prepared at home by mixing plain zinc oxide cream with your preferred lotion. You can mix calamine lotion and baby lotion in equal amounts and add a pinch of zinc oxide. This is an excellent sunscreen product for children.
  • Natural sunscreen oil is made by mixing vinegar and olive oil. Apply this on your skin one hour before you leave the house. Wash it off with mild soap afterwards. Avocado oil is also an effective sunscreen product. Rich in vitamin E and A, it provides excellent protection from the sun. You can blend some distilled water, titanium oxide, and avocado oil in a bottle by shaking it well to get a brownish lotion which is a helpful natural sunscreen product.
  • To prepare your own natural sunscreen lotion mix eight ounces of non-medicated lotion, five drops each of clove and peppermint oil, two to five teaspoons of powdered comfrey root, and two to four tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Mix the ingredients well and store in an airtight container and keep it in a cool place or in the refrigerator. Use clove and peppermint oil in exact amounts as any variation can cause skin irritation.
  • A useful alternative to sunscreen products is to take finely chopped cucumber and squeeze out the extract. Add a quarter cup of glycerin and a quarter cup of rose water. Mix the ingredients well and store in an airtight jar and preserve in a cool place.
  • To get rid of sun tan mix together two ounces of distilled water, eight to ten drops of lavender oil, and one to two drops each of peppermint and spearmint oil. This natural oil will help to get rid of your existing sun tan.
  • If you choose a sunscreen, be sure that the sunscreen products do not have carcinogens and harmful chemicals. Eat plenty of dark green, red, and yellow vegetables and fruits to keep your skin healthy and free from damage.
