Prenatal Vitamins for Hair Growth


Prenatal vitamins as hair growth supplements have become quite popular in recent years, but it is important to know what these vitamins are before you try them. Prenatal vitamins are often touted as a kind of home remedy for the skin, hair, and nails, but they can have side effects and are best treated with caution.

What are prenatal vitamins?

Taking prenatal vitamins for the hair is not really the purpose of these multi vitamin treatments. As the name suggests, prenatal vitamins are to be taken during pregnancy in order to provide additional nourishment to the mother and fetus. They are available in many forms — capsules, syrups, and so on — and besides the required vitamins include certain minerals such as calcium and iron. Prenatal vitamins are known to have the positive side effect of improving the quality of hair, and speeding up hair growth and nail growth. Many women also say that it improves the softness and smoothness of their skin.

The positive effect that prenatal vitamins have on hair is not entirely certain, as no research has yet shown such an effect. It is possible that the improved quality of hair, skin, and nails seen by pregnant women taking prenatal vitamins is due to other factors related to their pregnancy, and not due to the prenatal vitamins. A more important consideration is whether it is safe to take these prenatal vitamins as hair growth supplements. Although no serious harm can be done by this treatment, prenatal vitamins can cause several problems. The high iron content tends to cause constipation in many women. Nausea and vomiting are two more side effects that are often reported by women taking prenatal vitamins. In themselves, these are rather minor and transient problems — however, taking prenatal vitamins constantly could make these problems chronic. Chronic constipation and nausea can of course in turn cause other more serious problems.

It is therefore advisable to check with your doctor before you use prenatal vitamins as hair growth supplements. Even if your doctor tells you it is safe to go ahead, this is best done as a temporary treatment — for example, if you have a big event coming up, for which you want to look your best. Taking prenatal vitamins for a week or so is relatively safe, and any negative side effects will pass within a few days. Better still, you should simply try to get all the necessary minerals and vitamins from your diet. A healthy diet is much better than prenatal vitamins for the hair.
