What is Acne? Acne is something everyone can gladly do without. But for some unfortunate souls, the curse of acne starts during adolescence and carries on to the later stages of life. Acne is a skin condition caused by changes in the skin structures, consisting of hair follicles and the associated sebaceous glands. It is called Acne vulgaris in scientific terms. Acne can be inflammatory (severe) or non inflammatory. It is also referred to as pimples, blemishes, spots, or zits.

What is happening beneath my skin? Acne develops as a result of a blockage in the hair follicles. When there is an excess of keratin, a protein found in the skin, it causes dead skin cells to bond together. This blocks the hair follicle from growing, leading to acne. The black heads that you see are dead cells blocking the pores of your skin and not dirt.

What are the causes of acne? There are many acne causes. Some people develop acne due to family or genetic history. A family history of acne may explain its early occurrence. Hormonal activities such as the onset of the menstrual cycle and puberty can cause an increase in male hormones, known as androgens, which affect the secretion of sebum. The presence of bacteria in these pores can be another reason. Any medication containing lithium, barbiturates, or androgens will also trigger acne.

What are the natural skin care remedies for acne? There are a number of acne natural remedies that can help to ease your woes. You can mix oatmeal with yogurt into a thick paste and apply it on your face. Let it dry and then wash off with lukewarm water. This is an excellent acne natural remedy.
