An uneven skin tone may result from various factors which can be internal or environmental. The skin gets its color from a brown colored pigment called melanin which is produced in the body by cells called melanocytes. Certain areas of the body may contain less melanin than the rest of the body. The cells begin to produce more melanin when they are exposed to the sun's ultra violet radiation. When melanin builds up in certain areas of the skin, it can cause an uneven discoloration of the skin. The darkened patches are prone to further discoloration from subsequent sun exposure. Excessive oiliness in the skin can also result in uneven skin tone as the cells are not able to bind together properly due to inadequate sebum or natural oil. The dead cells tend to form clumps and adhere to the surface of the skin instead of being shed. This causes rough and cracked patches of skin. Uneven skin tone may also develop during hormonal changes in the body. This usually occurs during pregnancy or due to intake of birth control pills.

To prevent discoloration of the skin, one must take the required precautionary measures to protect the skin. Use a sunscreen whenever you go outdoors. A sunscreen with an SPF or sun protection factor of 15 and above will ensure adequate protection for your skin. Also remember to apply the sunscreen half an hour before stepping out, in order to allow it to take effect properly. It is also advisable to protect the skin by wearing a hat in the sun. A proper skin care regimen will also help in getting rid of an uneven skin tone. Regular exfoliation is required for removing the dead skin cells. You can use an exfoliating sponge or towel. There are also many exfoliating scrubs available for different skin types. Choose the one that best suits your skin and after cleansing the skin of any make up or cosmetics, scrub gently. You can follow it up with a gentle moisturizer to soften the skin.

An effective natural remedy for treating uneven skin tone is the application of lemon juice. After washing the face, you can apply the juice of a fresh lemon to the face using a cotton ball. This will have a bleaching effect on the skin which will help to balance out the skin tone. You can leave the lemon juice on for ten minutes and then rinse. Potato can also be used to naturally bleach the skin. Use grated potato or potato juice on the darkened patches of skin. A beneficial natural scrub can be made by mixing a teaspoon of crushed almonds with a teaspoon of oatmeal. Add a couple of tablespoons of honey and mix well. Gently scrub the skin with this mixture using circular movements and then rinse with lukewarm water.
