The hair can become dry and brittle due to various factors. Dietary habits most often reflect on the hair and if there is inadequate intake of nutrition, then the hair are most likely to suffer the consequences. Excessive washing of the hair can also result in dryness as it strips the natural moisture from the hair. Moreover, most shampoos that are available in the market today contain chemical ingredients that are also commonly used in household soap and detergent products. Long term use of such shampoos can result in dry and damaged hair. Excessive use of styling appliances that use heat also have the effect of drying out the hair. Hair cosmetics, chemical treatments and dyes also contain harmful chemicals that can damage the hair and cause dryness. Temperature is likely to affect the hair, and too hot or too cold climates can cause hair dryness. Certain medical conditions such as thyroid abnormalities can also result in dry hair.

There are several steps that you can take to get rid of the dryness in your hair and also prevent further dryness from occurring. Use mild shampoos, preferably herbal ones which have no chemical content. Condition your hair regularly in order to keep it soft and moisturized. Warm oil massages are very rejuvenating for dry and dull hair. You can use any oil such as almond, coconut, olive or castor oil. A combination of oils will also work well. After massaging the scalp with the oil, take a hot towel and wrap it around your head. This will allow the oil to penetrate deeper into the hair follicles. Stay away from heat appliances such as blow dryers and straightening irons. Also, protect your hair from excessive sun exposure as this can also cause dryness in the hair.

Natural remedies for the care of dry hair are available in abundance and regular use of such remedies will give you the desired results in a short span of time. A mixture of egg yolk and honey is a well known technique for treating dry hair. Take one egg yolk and mix it with a tablespoon of honey. Massage this into the scalp well, and leave it on for half an hour, before rinsing with lukewarm water. Aloe vera gel may also be gently rubbed into the scalp to nourish the hair roots and promote better growth of hair. Mayonnaise is known to be an effective fix for dry hair. It must be heated until it takes on an oily consistency and then applied to the scalp and hair. It may be left on for twenty minutes and then rinsed off with cool water.
