Chronic Hives – Chronic hives is medically referred to as chronic urticaria. Hives are small, red (sometimes white) raised welts on the skin. The welts usually appear in clusters and are accompanied by red patches called flares. Usually hives fade away within six weeks of eruption. However, when the hives persist for longer than six weeks without fading away, the condition is known as chronic hives. Chronic Hives Symptoms – The most common symptoms of hives are the red welts and flares that appear on the skin. These tend to be itchy and are also known to cause swelling. In some cases, individuals experience throat constriction, swelling of the tongue, and difficulty in breathing. A handful of patients suffering from chronic urticaria also experience a condition known as angio-oedema. This leads to a leakage of fluid into the skin tissues leading to tissue swelling. Chronic Hives Causes – While there is no one known cause for hives, chronic eruption can be triggered by conditions like stress, viral infection, extreme temperature fluctuations, etc. Whatever the trigger, it causes the body to release chemicals like histamine into the bloodstream. As a result of these chemicals, fluid leaks out from blood vessels and pools under the skin surface, forming hives. Chronic Hives Treatment – Chronic hives can be treated using a number of treatment options; these range from over-the-counter medication to reliable home remedies: • Antihistamine Tablets – Hives are a result of the release of histamines into the bloodstream. The easiest way to treat chronic hives is to block histamine flow. This can be done by one of the many antihistamines available in the market. • Steroid Tablets – If the symptoms are persistent and severe, doctors may recommend steroids to reduce inflammation. However, steroids are likely to cause certain side-effects. • Soothe the Rash – Applying cooling lotions, creams and cold compresses directly on to the affected area helps in soothing the rash and the itch, making it easier to cope during a hives outbreak. • Avoid Triggers – As they say, it’s better to be safe than sorry. As far as possible try to avoid or control a flare in known triggers like high anxiety, wearing tight clothes, exposure to common allergens like pollen, cat hair, etc. • Natural remedies for Chronic Urticaria – You could try a number of natural remedies like consuming herbal teas, eating foods rich in natural antihistamines like apples and leafy greens, taking cold showers, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet etc.
