21 Summer Hair Care Tips

Summer hair damage is often ignored as the effects take a while to become obvious. Basic hair care practices should be a part of any daily care regimen. In addition to this, it is important to protect your hair from the elements and provide it with the additional moisturizing that it needs during this season.

Summer hair protection

Protective clothing: Because of the increased amount of UV rays from the sun, hair damage is very common during summer. To prevent damage caused by the sun, hair protection in the form of a cap, scarf or a hat is necessary.
Chlorine: Chlorine from swimming pools can weaken your hair and increase breakage. Wear a swim cap to protect your hair.
Sea salts: Oil your hair well before you go for a dip in the ocean as sea salts can damage your hair. Make sure that you wash your hair well after your swim.
Hair band: Tie your hair when travelling, to protect it from dust and particle pollutants.

Summer hair care essentials

Coconut oil: Coconut oil acts as a mild sunscreen and protects your hair from damage caused by the sun's harmful UV rays. It is also very rich in nutrients and antioxidants and helps to keep your hair moisturized.
Sunscreen oil: If you intend to spend a lot of time outdoors, you can use a hair oil that contains sunscreen compounds as this will offer superior sun protection.
Cooling summer shampoo: lavender oil has a cooling and soothing effect, so add a few drops of this oil to your regular shampoo just before you use it.
Shampooing technique: Do not apply the shampoo directly to your hair, instead, mix it with a little bit of water before you use it. This will allow the shampoo to spread easily and evenly.
Conditioner: Conditioner is very important during summer so make sure that you do not skip it while washing your hair. Avocado paste is a simple but excellent conditioner.
Conditioning technique: Make sure that you only apply the conditioner to your hair and not your scalp. Also, make sure that you rinse your hair thoroughly as any residue conditioner will attract dirt and grime.

Summer hair care home remedies

Dandruff prevention: Squeeze a lemon and apply the juice to your entire scalp. Leave the juice in for at least 20 minutes and then wash your hair as usual. Use this treatment for every alternate hair wash to prevent dandruff.
Cleansing Hair pack: Mix a few spoons of fuller’s earth and tomato juice and apply the paste to your hair and scalp. Allow it to dry before you wash it off. This hair pack will help to keep your hair and scalp clean of all excess oil and grime.
Nourishing Hair pack: Deep condition your hair at least twice a month as this will prevent hair breakage and keep your hair smooth and silky. For a nourishing dry hair care hair pack, blend a banana and add a spoon or two of honey and a spoon of fresh coconut milk.
Cleansing hair tonic: Mix equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water and apply the solution to your hair and scalp for 20 minutes or so. This is very effective in cleansing your scalp if you have oily or dandruff-prone hair.
Nourishing Hair tonic: Juice a carrot, cucumber and a handful of fresh mint leaves and apply this juice to your hair and scalp. This is a cooling hair tonic that is effective in treating dry and frizzy hair.
Scalp scrub for oily hair: If you have very oily hair it would be advisable to use a scalp scrub at least once a month. Mix a little coarsely ground rice flour with tomato juice and massage your scalp gently with this paste before you shower.
Steaming: You can steam your hair to increase the amount of oil that is absorbed by your hair and scalp. To do this, dip a towel in hot water and squeeze out the excess water. Wrap the hot, moist towel around your head for at least 15 minutes.

Summer Diet

Hydrate: Dehydration is a common problem in summer and can make your hair dry and brittle so make sure that you drink an adequate amount of water daily.
Summer fruits: Fruits like watermelon, grapes and muskmelon have a high water content and promote hydration. A fruit bowl or a fruit salad containing these fruits can be included in your daily diet as a cooling summer snack.
Fresh Fruit juices: Substitute colas and alcoholic beverages with fruit juices. Fruit juices are also rich in nutrients that are essential for healthy hair.
Milk and milk products: Calcium deficiency can leave your hair dry and brittle. Include milk and milk products in your daily diet to protect hair in summer.
